God Help Us Stop The Leak

For a month now all of our eyes have been fixed on a busted pipe a mile deep in the Gulf of Mexico. Tens of thousands of gallons of oil have been pouring out of that pipe into the Gulf waters every day now and have now reached the shores of Louisiana and are wreaking havoc on some of the most precious breeding grounds for fish and birds in our nation. British Petroleum has been forced to switch on an underwater camera so that we can watch the oil pour out in ‘real time.’

It’s hard to tell at times what is the number one priority. Is it stopping the spill, protecting the shoreline, or deciding who to blame. Fingers are being pointed in every direction and tempers are flaring. People sitting at home are suggesting we use air conditioner filters, hay, and sand (among other things) to clean up the oil. That would probably be a great idea if the Gulf of Mexico was the size of a fish aquarium, but it’s not. I appreciate the armchair quarterbacking of people that have hay, air conditioner filters, and fish tanks setting around their house, but I think that I’ll stick with the engineers with their Ph.D.s on this one.

Meanwhile, something that is even more devastating is occurring that no one seems to pay any attention to at all. There are no 24-hour live stream video feeds to remind us of it, yet the results are far more devastating. I’m talking about the constant flow of sin that pours out of our homes and our nation. No one seems to notice. No one seems to care. If by chance someone does point out the problem then the finger pointing and the blame game begins. It is always somebody else’s problem. As to solutions, everybody has one, but none of them will ever work. There are those that want to focus on cleaning up what is one the surface, but no one seems to want to deal with the real issue because they don’t like the solution. Why not? Because it’s too difficult, it’s too out-of-the box, it’s too radical, it requires too much.

There is only one solution to stop the filth of sin that gushes out of our lives. The solution is repentance. The solution is to pump in the blood of Jesus with the force of the Holy Spirit behind it. God, please, help us stop the leak.
